Am I eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)?

Claim and upgrade to improve your heating system

What is the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)?

Firstly, RHI is a government financial incentive to promote the use of renewable heat – offering quarterly payments over seven years.

The UK Government’s Department for BEIS (Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy) makes key decisions, with energy regulator Ofgem administering the scheme. Policy documents can be found on the Ofgem website here.

Since launching in 2014, the scheme has seen thousands of people join and receive quarterly payments.

RHI Payback Estimate Example:

Property Type: 3/4 Bedroom House
Annual Heating Demand: 17,000 kWh
Annual Hot Water Demand: 3,000 kWh
System SPF: 3.5
Total Energy Demand: 20,000 kWh
RHI Tariff: £10.18p

Total RHI Payment over 7 years = £10,500

Are you eligible?

The eligibility of your property

When you own your home or if you are a landlord, you are eligible to apply for the RHI. Even if your property includes outbuildings that form part of the same property, such as workshops or studios, you can still apply for RHI.

Does your property have a Domestic EPC (Energy Performance Certificate)?

In order to claim RHI, your property must have an EPC that has been issued within the last 2 years. An EPC provides information on a property’s energy use and also recommends how to reduce energy and save money. Most importantly, an EPC is required each time you buy, sell or rent a property.

Is the product and installer MCS Accredited?

MCS refers to the Microgeneration Certification Scheme. It is a requirement of the Domestic RHI scheme that all heating systems are certified by MCS. Also, MCS is an internationally recognised quality assurance scheme supported by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). We are MCS accredited and therefore only use heat pumps which are fully MCS approved.

Do you have sufficient insulation?

Of course, ensuring you have sufficient insulation is important if it’s recommended in your EPC. If you don’t, you will still be able to apply for the scheme, but you must meet certain exemptions.
